How to make rainy days the best (so you forget it’s a rainy day)

So it’s pouring outside. The amount of water falling from the sky today could probably, solve the water crisis in California. I was supposed to go running, work on the garden, and get brunch with my girlfriends. Well, that’s a bust. But all hope is not lost!! Here’s how I turned my grey, soggy, Sunday into the best day ever.

I made a list
Anyone who knows me know that I obsess over lists. List for school, for shopping, for things to do, for things I’ve done, lists of favourite names and favourite books, lists for everything. The very first thing I needed to do this morning was make a list of what I would do today. Unlike most of my lists, the point of this one is simply to avoid boredom. Being stuck inside all day can be a drag, but it’s even more of a drag.

DIY pedicure
Yep, you heard right. You can do a pedicure all by yourself. Of course, it always looks better when the professionals do it (Au Premier works wonders) but there’s something nice about pampering your feet. The first step is to soak your feet. I did this in the bath. A simple Google search for DIY pedicure will bring up a dozen results, many of which don’t require any special tools or skills. Personally I just did a touch up on last weeks pedi, and it looks (almost) like new.

Old-Style hot chocolate, or a cappuccino.
It wouldn’t be a rainy day if you didn’t make some hot chocolate. I’ll be uploading my old-style hot chocolate recipe soon, so stay tuned for that. For a quick (and vegan) version, simply mix cocoa powder, sugar, and boiling water. It’s super quick, contains no animal products, and can be adjusted for varied sweetness or bitterness. I like to put 2 tablespoons of cocoa and 2 teaspoons of sugar in 300 mL of boiling water (approx. 1 mug). The best thing is that it can be made directly in the mug, no pot or dirty dishes required. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture of my hot chocolate, but you can look at my cappuccino instead if it makes you feel better.

Make a fancy sandwich
This is something that is fun to do, involves using your own creativity, and gets you eating a good, filling meal. Being stuck inside is a recipe for snacking (does that count as a pun?), so having something filling is key to avoiding the day long snack-a-thon. I would recommend my goat cheese grilled sandwich, which can be found in the food section of my blog.

A book like this can provide inspiration

Read a new book (or a new chapter)
If you’re anything like me, you have tons of new, unread books lying around the house (or dorm, or apartment). I’m always visiting libraries and bookstores and getting inspired, purchasing a brand new book, and then… not reading it for six months. Rainy days are the perfect time to crack open those treasure boxes. Reading at least a chapter is all it takes to get you hooked. I could probably stop my post here, since a book is really all you need.

Call a long-distance friend or family member
This may seem like a boring one, but how often do you remember at 11 o’clock at night that you were supposed to call Mom, and let’s be honest, when’s the last time you really had a conversation with your best friend from high school? Staying in contact is so easy nowadays, but despite this (or perhaps because of it), we’re always forgetting to have real conversations with the people in our life. So take this opportunity to make that conversation happen.

Watch one movie you’ve been meaning to watch (But only one)
I have a long list of critically acclaimed, artful, cultural movies that I’ve yet to see. Honestly, most of them are on Netflix. One example of this is Gone Girl, which I’ve heard amazing things about, yet am still not prepared to watch. Another less sophisticated movie is Mad Max, and that’s what I watched today. I’ve been putting it off forever, and let me say that it’s one of the best movies that I’ve ever seen in my life. Well, maybe not that great, but still totally amazing and worth it,.

Get ahead on your assignments
This only applies to students (me), but is still a noteworthy point. Even if Saturday is your designated homework, there’s always a benefit in doing things in advance, or getting ahead on your studying or on the material. University rewards those who get ahead, because one earlier day of studying for finals means one fewer day of cramming. Recopy your notes or go over your cue cards. Look ahead in your agenda to make sure you didn’t forget anything. Get in touch with your group partners, or start on that long project that is only due next month. You will thank yourself in the future.

Practice guitar
This is another one that is probably only applicable to people like me, but is worth mentioning anyways. Progress with my guitar has been painfully slow, mostly because I never seem to have enough spare time to practice all my chords and songs. By putting this in my list, I’m forcing myself to get my butt in gear. And this applies to any self-taught skill. If you’ve been wanting to learn Spanish, or to finish writing a computer program, or to play an instrument, this is your designated “do-it!” time.

Work out (and do it properly)
Like anyone, when I see it raining outdoors I automatically decide that the gym is not going to happen… this doesn’t mean you need to fall behind on your training. But this also doesn’t mean do two squats and call it a day! I would recommend using my 30-minute at-home workout plan, but a simple google search will provide you with any type of workout you need. Do a HIIT workout to get the most out of your time, and to cover both cardio and muscular training.

Crack open that cookbook
You know that cookbook? You probably got it for Christmas from your Aunt Susie, who always thought that you had a knack for cooking, and didn’t have the imagination to get you something you wanted? In my case, I deliberately asked for this cookbook, but have only tried 5 recipes out of it! It’s The Thug Kitchen 101 in case you’re wondering. It’s a fast, simple cookbook full of vegan recipes (and it’s freaking delicious). I found a recipe that I had all the ingredients for, and it was absolutely delicious.

This. Buy this.

The next thing you know, you’re getting ready for bed. Not only was the day fun, but it was also productive. Of course, this is just my anti-blue routine, but everyone has their own way of making a rainy day bright. What’s your method?
